Have you checked out the new NEON Arts District in Downtown Norfolk? This weekend is the perfect NEON-Festival-in-Downtown-Norfolk alt daily450weekend to do it! The second annual NEON Arts District Festival is happening from Thursday – Sunday, September 15-18, 2016. Art exhibitions from local and visiting artists will be on display. You can also enjoy music, theatrical performances, and guided mural tours – plus food and drink – at the festival. For your convenience, we’ve provided a list of festival events below. The Chrysler Museum: Third Thursday at the Museum

From 5:00PM until 10:00PM.

Located at The Chrysler Museum of Art at One Memorial Place, Norfolk, Virginia 23510.

Highlights: At the Museum, enjoy indoor and outdoor festivities with live music presented by LAVA Music Festival: Pyrrhic Whim, DJP and MrT, DJ set from Tmobyle and the Moderately Rough Jazz Combo, lawn games, food trucks, cash-bar, and more! Artist Talk with Brian Bress

Highlights: Brian Bress is a Norfolk-born, Los Angeles-based digital artist who will be premiering a new work at the Chrysler, Man With a Cigarette in the first-floor new media space called The Box. You can see a second Bress Work, WOWMOM, upstairs in the Contemporary Galleries. His free artist talk begins at 6:30PM.

Musing: A Performance Piece by Betty Gowans

Highlights: Musing is a piece that meshes sculpture with performance. Created by Norfolk artist Betty Gowans, it intends to provoke thought of the audience, as well as the wearer of the piece, by its juxtaposition and role in the situations that it is performed.

Walking Tour of the NEON District

Beginning at 3:30PM.

Highlights: Meet Seth Feman, Curator of Exhibitions at the Chrysler Museum of Art for a tour of In the Box: Brian Bress; walk through some of the public art projects in the NEON District; and join Cheryl White, Director of Glass Wheel Studio, for a tour of the latest exhibitions Gabriel Greenlaw and Emily MK. The tour will end at Work | Release to view the exhibition of the first “New Energy Artists Residency” featuring Sarah Blood. Free and open to the public!

Artist Talk with Sarah Blood

Highlights: The “New Energy Artists Residency” (or NEAR) Program, hosted by Chrysler Museum Glass Studio, the Rutter Family Art Foundation and Glass Wheel Studio, features the work of an emerging glass or new media artist. The Rhythm Project Performance

Highlights: A community engagement program of the Virginia Arts Festival, The Rhythm Project is a world percussion ensemble. They are bringing their steel drums back to NEON for the second year to play inside the Hurrah Players’ new Copeland Center.

Virginia Opera’s Tales From The Brothers Grimm

Highlights: Commissioned by the Virginia Opera in 2007, this original work by Dr. Glenn Winters contains three short comic operas featuring soprano, baritone, and pianist, drawn from the prolific collection of 19th century fairy tales by bothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm: Doctor Know-all, Rumpelstiltskin’s New Adventure, and Cat and Mouse Together.
