New Year’s Eve is traditionally one of the worst days of the year for alcohol-related car accidents and deaths. A recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a new study finding that on New Year’s Eve, alcohol related fatal crashes were 150 percent higher than the average for the same day of the week during the holiday season.

Don’t let the New Year start off deadly for you, your friends, or your family. If you are going to drink, have a designated driver. If a friend or family member has had too much to drink, don’t let them drive. If you aren’t drinking, be aware of the dangers that can arise from the actions of others.

Congratulations to Virginia drivers. The Virginia Highway Safety Office reported that traffic fatalities were down 13 percent in 2009 from 2008 in Virginia. There were 98 fewer deaths in 2009 than 2008. This number coincides with the highest number of seat-belt use reported.
