Is Meningioma Linked to Depo Provera?
RECENT STUDIES SHOW A CLEAR LINK
A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2024 shows there is evidence of a clear connection between women who use Depo Provera as a long term birth control method and an increased risk of developing meningioma. The study followed over 100,000 women for a period of 10 years. Researchers were able to conclude that women using the injectable birth control were diagnosed with intercranial meningioma at a rate of 5.6 times more often than women who do not use injectable birth control.
When the study picked up media attention, Pfizer released a statement to The Guardian acknowledging the link between use of the birth control injection and meningiomas. The drug manufacturer stated they were in the process of updating their warning labels. That warning will come too late for many women.

Pfizer, Maker of Depo Provera Failed to Warn Women About the Risks
MANUFACTURERS KNEW THE DANGER
As early as 1995, drug manufacturer, Pfizer was aware of research suggesting a link to increased rates of meningiomas in women using Depo Provera. The company did not adequately warn doctors or patients of the potential risk associated with using this popular birth control. It wasn’t until the March study was published that Pfizer stated, “We are aware of this potential risk associated with long-term use of progestogens and, in collaboration with regulatory agencies, are in the process of updating product labels and patient information leaflets with appropriate wording.”
The FDA already advises that the drug be used for a maximum of 2 years after research suggested a link to loss of bone density associated with long term use, but no warnings were made about the link to intercranial or spinal tumors. When drug manufacturers know there is a potential for adverse risks or side-effects, they have a duty to disclose that. Failure to do that is the basis for a lawsuit.

What is Meningioma?
Meningioma is described as a slow-growing, intercranial tumor. These tumors are most often benign, but can cause significant and life-changing symptoms depending on their location and treatment. Due to the slow progression of these tumors, many women do not seek medical attention until more substantial neurological symptoms develop. These tumors can reemerge after treatment in a more aggressive form, so long term monitoring may be necessary.
Symptoms of Meningioma
These tumors may grow over several years before any symptoms present. The patient may experience vision or hearing impairment, a loss of smell, or changes in personality. They are also associated with headaches that persist despite medication and grow in frequency and severity over time. It’s often this symptom that leads to a neurological exam and imaging, revealing the tumor.

If you’ve been injured on the job, workers’ compensation insurance may entitle you to critical assistance like medical treatment, lost wages, and more. But insurance companies will put up an aggressive fight to resist paying you the compensation you need and deserve. Rutter Mills can help get you the money you deserve.
