Yes. Virginia law requires drivers to stop and report any crash that injures or kills someone or damages an attended vehicle or other attended property. Under Virginia Code § 46.2-894, every driver involved must stop immediately, as close to the scene as possible without blocking traffic. Each driver must then give their name, address, driver’s license number, and vehicle registration number to the police, to the injured person, or to the driver or a passenger of the other vehicle.
Drivers must also give reasonable help to anyone injured, including getting them to a doctor or hospital when treatment is clearly needed or requested. A driver who is too badly hurt to do any of this must, as soon as reasonably possible, report the crash to police and make a reasonable effort to find the other people involved.
Leaving the scene without stopping and reporting is a crime. It’s a felony when someone is injured or killed or when property damage is more than $1,000, and a misdemeanor when the damage is $1,000 or less.
