The US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has joined with local law enforcement officers, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the Governors Highway Safety Assorciation and the National Center for DWI Courts to mark the start of its annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.  This campaign comes on the heals of statistics citing 70 percent of dates in drunk driving crashes in 2010 involved drivers with BAC levels that were twice the .08 legal limit.
More than 10,000 local police departments and law enforcement agencies across the country will be supporting the campaign through Labor Day weekend.
The increased police force and traffic stops will target drunk drivers in a traditionally bad time for alcohol related traffic accidents that comes at the end of the summer.  By being out in full force, and sending a message the forces hope to deter drunk drivers from even considering driving drunk at the end of this summer season.
is this enough?  Absolutely not, but it is a start to raise awareness, which is always a problem with driving intoxicated.  The omnipresent train of thought that “it could never happen to me” or “I am different” seems to be prevailing when it comes to driving intoxicated, which is a huge problem that awareness can help.  The sad fact is that drunk and “buzzed” driving account for an alarming percentage of traffic accidents, and an even greater percentage of fatal accidents.
