Contributing to the enhancement of our community is important to Rutter Mills. Many staff members actively volunteer with various non-profit groups throughout Hampton Roads. One great example is Rutter Mills Personal Injury Attorney, Joe Young. For 26 years, Joe has volunteered his time to help young people and families take part in the arts via the non-profit family theater group, The Hurrah Players. This Downtown Norfolk-based group is Virginia’s leading family theater company, and provides education and experience to young aspiring actors, musicians, and production crew members. Classes are held year-round for both children and adults. The group makes it possible for entire families to be involved in theater productions. Each year, full scholarships are provided for an average of 50 students who would otherwise be unable to afford to participate. Classes include tap, dance, acting, theater production, and TV broadcasting.

Since 1986, Joe Young has played many roles, including serving on the Board of Directors, acting as Vice Chairman and Secretary, and participating in fundraising efforts. Joe even built theater sets and made costumes for the organization when his two daughters were in the Hurrah Players from ages 5-15. Additionally, over the last two decades, Joe and his wife have held a raffle before every Hurrah Players performance. This raffle alone has raised an estimated $60,000 – $70,000 dollars to benefit The Hurrah Players!

The Hurrah Players group plays a significant role in the futures of many young people. Many Hurrah Players have been accepted into The Governor’s School for the Arts. Additionally, there are currently eight former Hurrah Players performing on Broadway, and one Hurrah graduate had been nominated for a Tony Award this year. In fact, the actor who currently plays The Flash on TV, Grant Gustin, is a former Hurrah Player!

The Hurrah Players group is a valuable community resource for those in Hampton Roads who love theater, and Joe Young’s work with the group is a huge contribution. After 26 years of volunteer work with The Hurrah Players, his efforts continue to benefit the futures of many young aspiring performers and theater production professionals. We are so proud to call Joe Young a member of our family of personal injury lawyers here at Rutter Mills!
