My name is Arthur Rutter. I’m the one everyone refers to as “Brother Rutter” around here. I’m one of the managing partners, and have spent my entire law practice here at the law firm of Rutter Mills. I live in Virginia Beach now, that’s where I grew up, but I spent a lot of time all over the state. Whether in our Norfolk office, in our Newport News office, or in our Roanoke office.

I went to school here in Norfolk, and immediately after high school I attended college at Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

I went to law school at the T.C. Williams school of law here in Virginia at the University of Richmond. I was fortunate enough to graduate first in my class, and I’ve been practicing law here ever since.

We deal with all areas of what some people call “Personal injury litigation,” what some people call “Civil litigation. We help people who are injured in automobile accidents. People that are hurt at work. People that need help getting their Social Security Disability. People that work for the railroad or work for maritime companies out on the water. Whatever it is when people are hurt, they often need help dealing with the large corporations or the insurance companies, and we deal with all aspects of that type of injury litigation.

I think there’s so much mystery to what happens in a lawsuit, what happens with the insurance company when once you’re injured in an automobile accident or in some other way. One big part of my day is to pull back the curtain of that mystery a little bit, to explain to you what the process is going to be, to take away some of that fear of what’s going to happen next.

I think by doing that, that allows you to concentrate on getting well. Taking care of you, taking care of your family. We’ll take care of the insurance company. We’ll take care of the courts. You take care of getting better.

We’ve been fortunate. We’ve been successful. We’ve got a lot of people working here, and a lot of lawyers and we work on these cases as a team. We’re able to level the playing field, no matter how many people or how much money the insurance companies or corporate defendant want to throw at the case, we can match it, person for person, dollar for dollar, day in and day out.

This idea of helping people and helping families is the core principle that makes me so proud of the work that we do and lets me know that the work that we do is so necessary.
