Children May Respond to Trauma Differently
Children may not have the words to explain how a car accident affected them emotionally. Instead, signs of trauma often appear through changes in behavior, routines, or physical complaints.
After a crash, parents and caregivers may notice:
- Clinginess or separation anxiety
- Nightmares or difficulty sleeping
- Irritability, tantrums, or emotional outbursts
- Regression, such as bedwetting or thumb-sucking in younger children
- Difficulty concentrating at school
- Frequent headaches or stomachaches with no clear medical cause
- Increased fear of riding in a car or traveling near the crash location
Many children improve with patience, reassurance, and a consistent routine. If symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere with daily life, a pediatrician or mental health professional can help evaluate whether additional support is needed.
